Domino's Pizza Group first quarter sales up 12.3%

RBR Staff Writer Published 05 April 2013

Domino's Pizza Group reported a sales of £164.1m for the 13-week period (first quarter) to 31 March 2013, compared to £146.2m in the corresponding period a year ago.

The 12.3% growth in sales was attributed to the increase in like-for-like sales, despite the disruptive impact of the snow early in the quarter.

Like-for-like sales in the UK increased by 6.6%. The company attributed the growth to sales of new products such as the Domino's Hot Dog Stuffed Crust, a successful short-term price led promotion and some weaker comparative figures due to warmer weather last year.

Like-for-like sales in the Republic of Ireland, rose 8.1%, while In Germany, like-for-like sales, went up 40.3% in the period. In Switzerland, like-for-like sales, grew 9.3% for the period.

In the quarter, 61.9% of all UK delivered sales came through the internet, in comparison to prior year's 49.8%.

Looking ahead Domino's Pizza chief executive officer Lance Batchelor said, "We know that the ongoing economic pressures are leading to a tough trading environment and we have extremely tough comps in the second quarter to overcome as well as food cost increases coming through during the year, but, with first class franchisees and a strong head office team, I expect, at this early stage in the year, that trading will be in line with market expectations for 2013."

As of 31 March, there were 810 stores in the UK, Republic of Ireland, Germany and Switzerland.

The company aims to open 60 new stores in the UK and 18 in Germany in 2013.
