ABFoods to expand Primark chain in Europe

Published 06 November 2013

ABFoods, a British multinational food processing and retailing company, plans to increase the expansion pace of its Primark discount chain in Europe.

As per the plan, one million square feet of selling space will be added to Primark stores in Britain, Spain, Germany, France and the Netherlands.

This will increase the size of the chain to 257 stores, after growing 0.8 million in the financial year September 14 to a total of 9 million.
Primark opened its first store in Dublin in 1969 under the name Penneys and launched in Britain in 1973.

Focusing on growth, Primark plans to increase its presence in other countries like Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Italy in the medium-term.

Keeping in view of the less number of Primark stores in Germany, George Weston, chief executive, ABFoods, said, "One day we will have a hundred or more."

Primark is also planning to open 13 new stores in time for Christmas, including five in Inditex's home market of Spain.

It will open its first store in France in December 2013, and more shopping centres in Continental Europe.
